1.jpgEnglish tutors, Sophia and RJ, hosted an online event through Zoom for students who wished to join and learn about various Valentine’s Day celebrations around the world. As Sophia and RJ are both from America, they spoke about the customs and traditions that are common in the U.S. For example, almost everyone celebrates the day.As children, they bring cards and candy for every student in their elementary school class. As adults, couples will spend the day together and exchange gifts.

The tutors also shared information about how Valentine’s Day is celebrated in many different countries.

≪France≫
Valentine’s Day is a historical day because the first Valentine’s Day card is thought to have been sent by a French duke in 1415.

≪Italy≫
There is a tradition of young women waking up in the morning on Valentine’s Day, looking outside, and believing that the first man they saw would be their husband within 1 year or at least look like him.

≪Philippines≫
Mass weddings on Valentine’s Day are very popular. Hundreds of couples come to one venue and get married at the same time while enjoying free benefits, like free food, cake, and even wedding rings.

≪Brazil≫
They celebrate “Lover’s Day” on June 12th instead of Valentine’s Day, but they still exchange many of the same gifts, such as chocolate and flowers, and they may even enjoy musical concerts or festivals.

≪Argentina≫
They celebrate the “Week of Sweetness,” which happens in July. Couples exchange many gifts, like chocolate and other sweets.

The students explained Valentine’s Day celebrations in Japan and how they are different from those in other countries. The students shared that women often give chocolate and sweets to men, which is the opposite in America. One student shared a story from when he was a high school student. He said many of the boys made a competition out of how much chocolate they received from their female classmates.

Women also often make the chocolate and sweets by hand. Many girls jokingly said this is unfair because the women spend so much time and effort while the men do nothing for Valentine’s Day. If the men want to reciprocate, they will do so on White Day (March 14th) in Japan.

Ten students attended this event, and they learned a lot of new information about how holidays are celebrated around the world. Many students expressed that they had a lot of fun and that this event inspired them to begin studying English even harder now. We want to have many more of these events in the future so that students can practice their language skills, build relationships, and learn about international cultures during a time when traveling is not possible.
