Sasha and Edna were invited to participate in one of the informal workshops in the Flatto Bunkyo. We talked about how young children learn language, particularly a second/foreign language by differentiating sounds. Babies are usually very interested in picture books and reading with your baby helps his /her language develop. These toddlers with their moms got more interested in listening to different sounds when Sasha started reading “I am a penguin and I turn my head. Can you do it?” (“From Head to Toe” by Eric Carle)
今日は午前中、「ふらっと」で開かれている子育て講座に参加してもらいました。子どもの異文化理解についての話をした後、英語の本の読み聞かせや手遊びで音の違いを体感しながら、親子で楽しんでもらいました。サーシャがエリックカールの ”From head to toe” という本を読みだすと、今まで遊んでいた子どもたちが音のなる方にじっと引きつけられていました。
Edna read a bilingual book called “I like it when… “ in both English and Spanish. While she was reading it, a 9 month old boy looked simply amazed to discover a variation of the sounds of words and stare at her with his mouth open for a while!
今度は、エドナーに英語とスペイン語で書かれている本 ”I like it when…” を両言語で読んでもらいました。前にいた9か月の男の子が「何がおこったのか」という顔つきで、口をポカーンとあけてじっとエドナーの持っている本を眺めていたのが印象的でした。
We also shared Sing Along Songs and fingerplays with easy, repeating lyrics sung to familiar tunes such as “Open shut them”, “Itsy bitsy spider”, and “Five little ducks.” Kids love music and rhymes, bouncing and swaying to the rhythm. Later we discussed child caring issues between Japan and the US: the process of potty training, when and how to stop co-sleeping with parents, and when, what, and how to start baby on solid foods.
最後に、みんなで手遊びをしながら英語の歌を歌って楽しみました。子どもたちが一緒に歌うにはちょっとまだ早いようですが、お母さんが子どもと一緒になって、動作をつけながら歌ってあげることで、子どもに音とリズムの楽しさを共感してもらえるでしょう。英語バージョンの「むすんでひらいて」は、「ひらいてむすんで」というように始まりますが、２歳を過ぎると写真の子はもう手を開いたり結んだりして真似していました！ その後、お母さんたちから質問が出て、日米の子育てについて、例えばトイレトレーニングの時期、親との添い寝について、離乳食の内容、家庭での食事の時のマナーなどについてディスカッションをしました。
Sasha and Edna participated in art class this afternoon. They just tried out the pottery wheel but they ended up learning wheel skills of centering, opening, pulling up, shaping, and trimming, and made three clay potteries within a couple of hours! The instructor and some students helped them a lot. They, with no experience, can explore this fun activity. The instructor will glaze and fire their pieces to finish their potteries later and I’ll bring the final pieces to Santa Cruz next March!
