They observed another class this afternoon. The class is designed for students who want to improve their English in addition to their majors such as psychology and medical technology. Today’s theme for discussion was “pop culture or traditional culture”. The students were encouraged to speak to one another including Melissa and Mireya only in English. The best way to gain proficiency in a language is to practice speaking it!

They visited the Flower Arrangement and Tea Ceremony Club later this afternoon. They took lessons in flower arrangement (Ikebana in Japanese). Melissa started with putting base flowers in a bowl. After that she was inserting greeneries.

While flower arrangement in the West consists of symmetrically arranging flowers in a vase, Japanese Ikebana (literally ‘flowers kept alive’) is a lot more complex. Mireya was paying attention to what the teacher was doing.
