Melissa and Mireya held a special session called “Let’s play in English!” after school, assisted by 4 Japanese students. They started playing “Patty Cake” with children. It is one of the most widely known surviving English nursery rhymes. Patty cake, patty cake, bakers’ man. Make me a cake as fast as you can. …

Mireya did flannel board stories and activities which can capture the attention of young children. Mireya asked, “Where is a mouse hiding?”

They were singing “Slippery Fish”  “Slippery fish, slippery fish swimming in the water … Gulp, gulp, gulp! Oh, no he’s been eaten by Octopus! …” This is a song about bigger fish eating the smaller fish. One girl cried when she heard “Gulp, gulp, gulp!” She might have protested the world where the weak are victims of the strong!

They did the Hokey Pokey in a circle with the children. Getting children up and moving their bodies to music is a fun and simple form of exercise. The Hokey Pokey can also help children identify their different body parts and learn their right side from their left side. “You put your left hand in, you put your left hand out….”
